UNMIL completes its mandate in a now peaceful Liberia

Monrovia, 30 March 2018 - Established in October 2003, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1509(2003) upon the signing of the August 2003 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) today successfully ended its final mandate, Security Council Resolution 2333, after a nearly 15-year deployment in Liberia.

“The withdrawal of UNMIL signifies that we are leaving behind a country whose citizens can now enjoy relatively peaceful lives. Liberia has great potential to achieve lasting stability, democracy and prosperity,” said Farid Zarif, UNMIL’s Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General.

In a statement released by United Nations Headquarters today, the Secretary-General welcomed the successful conclusion of the mandate and congratulated the people and Government of Liberia for their determination to turn the page on crisis and conflict.

The Secretary-General also reiterated that, following the departure of UNMIL, the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) present in Liberia, comprising sixteen United Nations Agencies, Funds and Programmes, is committed “…to continuing to support the Government with the implementation of outstanding reform activities with a view to ensuring that the hard-won peace can be sustained and the country and its people will continue to progress and thrive”.
