Quick Reaction Force of MINUSMA Hosts Base in Ogossagou in Mali

The Policy and Best Practices Service operates within the Division of Policy, Evaluation and Training (DPET). DPET supports DPO in identifying emerging and evolving policy issues, forging consensus and developing related capabilities and guidance, integrating these into training and ensuring the monitoring and evaluation of performance. Years of experience and documented impact make PBPS a key contributor to departmental efforts aimed at increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of peacekeeping efforts in the areas of protection of civilians, child protection, conflict-related sexual violence, human rights, knowledge management, civil affairs, performance, strategic force generation, policy planning, partnership and on emerging issues such as information integrity and climate peace and security.

Liaison Office Brussels

Support strengthening of the partnership with the EU and NATO through implementation of joint UN-EU priorities and the UNNATO joint statement in support of UN peacekeeping. Support senior visits and provide political and operational updates

Policy Planning

Explore and develop new approaches and policy initiatives to shape peacekeeping’s ongoing evolution and adaptation; support legislative bodies, serve as a catalyst for new ideas, and facilitate dialogue

Progamme Management

Support PBPS and/or DPET as needed through the effective management of human resources, finance, and project administration, ensuring compliant processes, timely delivery of programme activities, and high-quality operational support to missions and Headquarters.

Information Integrity

Mitigation of strategic and operational risks posed by harmful information (including misinformation, disinformation, hate speech). Provide guidance and training; advisory services; facilitation of technology tools; facilitation of best practice and learning

Learning, Civil Affairs & Human Rights Pillar

Civil Affairs

Support political solutions at the local level, increase operational coherence at field offices level and engage communities and youth in the implementation of peacekeeping mandates.

Knowledge Management and Guidance

Help UN peacekeeping build on its successes, learn from its failures and adapt to changing contexts. Ensure peacekeeping policy and guidance materials are available and timely reviewed

Sustaining Peace

Co-locating with DPPA/PBSO, foster stronger links between peacekeeping, peacebuilding and development and support peacekeeping aspects in PBAR and Pact for the Future.

Human Rights

Support the consistent and systematic integration of human rights principles, policies and standards in the work of DPO Currently Unfunded

Special Projects and Innovation

Leverages existing in-mission and external social innovation initiatives to strengthen the capacities of national staff, communities, and local government.

Protection and Performance Pillar

Child Protection

Support child protection by UN peacekeeping personnel through policy, guidance, training and substantive backstopping of missions, and the provision of expertise and advice at Headquarters

Strategic Force Generation and Capability Planning Cell

Help meet current and emerging peacekeeping capability needs and improve the performance of UN peacekeeping

Protection of Civilians

Support the full and effective protection of civilians by UN Peacekeeping through policy, guidance, and proactive back-stopping of missions. Support POC as a priority across the Organization and with partners, today and tomorrow

Conflict-Related Sexual Violence

Innovative training, mission-specific guidance, enhanced UN coordination and coherence, and strategic advocacy, awareness, and engagement to strengthen peacekeeping efforts to prevent and respond to CRSV

Partnerships and Climate

Facilitate operational cooperation with regional and international partners. Deepen understanding of the links between climate and conflict and support effective mandate implementation in climate-impacted settings
