UN police magazine 2 - June 2007
The 2nd edition of the UN Police Magazine highlights the work of the first all-female Formed Police Unit, which arrived in Liberia at the beginning of this year, the role played by UN Police in elections in Timor-Leste, the work of specialized UN Police Units in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, police training in Haiti and other key developments at a time of unprecedented global demand for peacekeepers in general and police in particular.

Establishing the rule of law is essential to achieving sustainable peace, and police-support activities are central to this effort, says the UN Police Adviser in the first edition of the UN Police Magazine. The growing role of Formed Police Units in global policing and the importance of attracting more female officers are other highlights of the firs UN Police Magazine. The fundamental purpose of UN Police is to build institutional capacity in post-conflict environments and to help facilitate a secure environment.

The Standard Operating Procedures on Performance Appraisals of United Nations Police Officers (2006) set-forth the principles, standards and procedures
applicable for the appraisal of the performance of certain categories of United Nations Police Officers deployed as Experts on Mission in United Nations peacekeeping operations. The Standard Operating Procedures are adopted in order to present, in a factual and documented form, the performance, competence and capabilities of the concerned United Nations Police Officers. Such records should be used inter alia in making decisions on extending the tour of duty of officers, selection for future missions, or consideration for managerial responsibilities with the United Nations.

Guidelines for FPUs on assignment with peace operations (2006)
The guidelines for formed police units (FPUs) on assignment with peace operations contain general information about the operational, administrative, logistical and other related aspects of deployment of FPUs in a UN peace operation. These guidelines are complementary to other documents and will be made available to Member States as well as members of the FPUs upon their arrival in the Mission area. The guidelines provide Member States with relevant information, standardize procedures pertaining to FPUs in a mission and ensure FPU personnel are fully aware of the operational, administrative, logistical and other related aspects pertaining to the deployment of FPUs to the mission.
