United Nations, New York, 10 July 2013 - The European Commission's Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) has announced they will contribute EUR 1.5 million for mine action activities in South Sudan. This generous contribution will save lives and increase freedom of movement by opening key access routes and providing mine risk education. Roads previously inaccessible due to the threat of mines and explosive remnants of war, primarily in the northern Jonglei State, will be assessed and cleared, allowing free movement for the local population as well as the internally displaced, refugees, returnees and humanitarian aid workers. Through ECHO's contribution, at-risk populations will also be taught to recognise potentially dangerous sites and items, keeping themselves safe in areas where clearance has not yet taken place.
