Preserving South Sudan's History and Culture!

On September 9, 2024, UNMAS UNMISS, in collaboration with key partners, conducted a visit to the proposed construction site of the National Archives Building site in Hai Soura, Juba, South Sudan. The

visit was to assess the progress of explosive ordnance clearance operations at the proposed construction site for the National Archives Building, a project supported by UNOPS, UNESCO, the Norwegian Embassy, and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.

The Director General of the National Archives, Hon. Mawien Ariik, highlighted how critical the project will be, saying it will enable the preservation of the country’s history. The visit included the UNMAS Chief of Mine Action Programme OiC, Goran Tomasevic, representatives from UNOPS, UNESCO, and the National Mine Action Authority. Since clearance began in July 2024, 49 unexploded ordnances (UXOs) and 80 small arms ammunition have been disposed of.

“Before construction can begin, we need to ensure that the site is completely clear of unexploded ordnance. We are grateful to UNMAS for the work they are doing.” William Muchira,Program Manager, UNOPS.

This monumental work is not just about clearing land; it’s about securing a future where South Sudan’s heritage is preserved and celebrated. UNMAS dedication to explosive ordnance risk mitigation plays an enabling function to the UNMISS mandate, ensuring a safe and stable environment for peace and development in South Sudan. Together, we’re making history by protecting history.
