UNMAS Colombia signed a Declaration of Intent on 26 May together with the EU Delegation in Colombia. The declaration marks UNMAS agreement to design and implement a project of building national mine action capacity worth EUR 1.8 million and European Union agreement to fund the project. The declaration was signed by Yohn F Medina Vivanco - UNMAS Programme Manager on behalf of Ms. Agnès Marcaillou, UNMAS Director and Ms. Ana Paula Zacarias - EU Embassador Chief of Delegation in Colombia. As witnesses: Mr. Rafael Pardo - Colombian High Commissioner for Post- Conflict, Security and Human Rights and Ms. Federica Mogherini - High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. UNMAS Programme Manager, together with the Italian First Secretary, went on a field visit to the Italian-funded and UNMAS-contracted Halo Trust demining teams in Antioquia to observe the clearance teams at work. The Italy-funded deminers made significant advances over the course of the project, clearing a total of 12,103m², and safely destroying seven landmines in the process. Clearance was completed on 3 minefields; 2 in the municipality of Sonsón; ‘El Tanque’ (12th December2015) and ‘El Vagón de San Isidro’ (25th February 2016) and one in Nariño; ´Buenos Aires (18th March 2016) which HALO has now handed over to local communities for their safe use.
